# St Cybi, Holyhead

St Cybi’s is a Grade I Church in Wales church in a churchyard overlooking Holyhead’s inner harbour, entered from Market Square, in the Diocese of Bangor. It stands within the walls of a late Roman fort.

## Overview

Cadw records a church traditionally founded by St Cybi inside a late Roman fort. The present building is mainly a late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century rebuilding: a late fifteenth-century chancel incorporating thirteenth-century masonry; transepts of about 1480; north aisle of about 1500; south aisle and porch with stair turret of about 1520; a seventeenth-century west tower; an early nineteenth-century vestry; restoration of 1877–79 by Sir Gilbert Scott; and the south (Stanley) chapel of 1896–97.

The exterior is brown stone in late Perpendicular style with battlemented parapets. The two-stage west tower has a pyramidal roof and an eighteenth-century weather vane dated 1753. The south porch is richly carved, with heraldry, a Trinity under a canopy, and 1877–79 fan vaulting. The Stanley chapel holds an Italian marble monument by Hamo Thornycroft and a Morris & Co window designed by Burne-Jones. Cadw lists the church Grade I as an outstanding late medieval church in North Wales.
