# St Cuthbert, Kentmere

St Cuthbert’s at Kentmere, Cumbria, is a Grade II Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Carlisle, a small valley church with sixteenth-century fabric, substantially rebuilt in 1866.

## Overview

Historic England lists the Church of St Cuthbert (NHLE 1336083, listed 30 October 1989). The list records a parish church of the sixteenth century, substantially rebuilt by subscription in 1866, with further alterations in the 1930s: roughcast rubble and a local graduated slate roof, west saddleback tower, nave and chancel externally undivided, and a south porch. The interior is an uninterrupted space with a sixteenth-century roof of moulded ties, ridge-piece and purlins. The only monument of note is to Bernard Gilpin (1901) by the Keswick School of Industrial Arts. A priest is recorded at Kentmere by 1453; Rev. Thomas Machell’s 1690s sketches already show a building close to the present plan, except the raised tower of 1866. The church stands on a brow overlooking the valley and remains open daily.
