# St Cuthbert, Holme Lacy

St Cuthbert’s stands in a bend of the River Wye about a mile south-east of Holme Lacy village, a Grade I redundant parish church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church of the thirteenth, fourteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, extensively repaired in 1924, of sandstone rubble and ashlar with tiled roofs. The plan is a west tower continuous with a six-bay nave and two-bay chancel, south aisle and south chapel, north chapel and south porch. Nave and south aisle, chancel and south chapel run without structural division under plaster tunnel vaults of about 1660–70.

The Scudamore family were patrons from the Middle Ages. Monuments include the tomb chest of John Scudamore (d. 1571) and a wall monument to James Scudamore (d. 1668), possibly by Grinling Gibbons. The seventeenth-century font has a richly decorated bowl. Medieval stall carvings include angels, a horned demon and a dog. The chancel north window incorporates fragments of medieval glass. Listed Grade I on 26 January 1967 (NHLE 1099563). The church is in the historic Diocese of Hereford.
