# St Cuthbert, Corsenside

St Cuthbert’s is a Grade II parish church off the A68 at Corsenside, Redesdale, Northumberland, in the Diocese of Newcastle. It stands on St Cuthbert’s Way in Northumberland National Park.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of the twelfth century, with a bellcote and south door of 1735, mid-nineteenth-century nave windows, a seventeenth-century priest’s door and a nineteenth-century south porch. The fabric is dressed stone with a slate roof and asbestos tiles to the chancel: a six-bay nave (windows on the south only), two-bay chancel, south porch and a lean-to on the north. The south door has an elliptical head with a date on a triple keystone. The chancel has a Tudor-arched priest’s door, an eighteenth-century twelve-pane sash and a nineteenth-century east window with intersecting tracery. A gabled west bellcote has a ball finial. Inside, an unmoulded twelfth-century chancel arch sits on plain chamfered imposts. There is an eighteenth-century octagonal font, four medieval grave slabs on the nave wall, an eighteenth-century altar rail, and Reed family monuments of the eighteenth century on the south wall. The interior was thoroughly restored in the late twentieth century. Listing NGR: NY8902089266.

The Church Heritage Record describes a small isolated church sixteen miles north of Hexham. Peter Ryder has suggested evidence that the nave was once vaulted as a defensible retreat.
