St Cuthbert, Beltingham

St Cuthbert is a Grade I parish church in the hamlet of Beltingham, Northumberland, in the Diocese of Newcastle and the parish of Beltingham with Henshaw.

Overview

Historic England records a late fifteenth-century parish church, extended in the seventeenth century and restored in 1884. The fabric is squared stone and rubble under a slate roof. Externally it is a six-bay single cell; the western three bays are thought to be a seventeenth-century addition. An 1884 north vestry occupies the site of a medieval sacristy or chapel. Windows are of three trefoil-headed lights under elliptical arches. The east window has five cinquefoil-headed lights with panel tracery. A squared-stone bellcote is corbelled out at the west.

The listing notes relief carvings on the inner splays of the three eastern south windows, a barred rectangular squint north of the sanctuary, a simple circular font, and a twelfth-century cross slab reset in a blocked doorway. Roof timbers and furnishings are of 1884; the east window glass is by Kempe. Co-Curate records older fabric of about 1260 and a former role as a domestic chapel for Willimontswick. Ancient yews stand in the churchyard.
