Overview
The present church was built in 1959 and consecrated in 1960, replacing a Victorian church founded in 1881. That earlier building, a plain brick church by H. Lord of John Dalton Street, was consecrated on 16 February 1881 by the Bishop of Manchester. Funds came in part from the sale of St Clement’s, Lever Street; William Clowes gave the site. Lancashire OPC locates the parish church at SJ 831 999 and notes replacement in 1958.
The Manchester Modernist Society describes the 1959 building as a time capsule of late-1950s modernism: a pierced stone-clad bell tower, cellular concrete facade, and simple interlocking planes. Architecture North West attributed the design to Paterson and Macaulay; the same society later recorded a conflicting attribution to A. H. Walker (possibly Albert Hilton Walker of Leach Rhodes Walker). The church is not on the National Heritage List for England. It serves a densely urban parish as a sister church to St James, Higher Broughton.
