# St Clement, Grainthorpe

St Clement’s is a Grade I marshland parish church on Church Lane, Grainthorpe, East Lindsey, in the Diocese of Lincoln. It has stood at the centre of the village for some eight centuries.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church of about 1200, with work of 1358, the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, 1665, an 1876 restoration that shortened the chancel by one bay, and a 1909 restoration. Fabric is ashlar and lined render, with lead roofs behind parapets. The plan is a western tower, clerestoried nave, aisles, north chapel, chancel and south porch. The fifteenth-century four-stage ashlar tower has battlemented parapets with eight pinnacles and gargoyles. The north arcade retains responds of about 1200; otherwise the four-bay arcades are later medieval. The listing notes a fifteenth-century font.

The parish describes clawed bases to the north arcade columns as twelfth- or thirteenth-century survivals, with the church remodelled when the tower and clerestory were added. Grainthorpe was once closer to the sea and an important port. A Heritage Lottery Fund repair project in the 2010s funded roof and stonework works and added visitor facilities.
