# St Catherine, Pontcanna

St Catherine’s is a Grade II Church in Wales parish church on Kings Road, Pontcanna (Canton), Cardiff, in the Diocese of Llandaff.

## Overview

Cadw records a church built in three phases. J. Prichard designed the first three bays of the nave in 1883–86 (his cruciform plan proved over-ambitious). Kempson and Fowler added the chancel with south chapel and north vestry in 1892–93 (foundation stone 1892). G. E. Halliday added the two west bays in 1897. The church is faced in thin courses of dark brown Pontypridd stone rubble with Bath stone ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs. The plan is a five-bay nave and chancel, side aisles with separate gabled roofs, a Lady Chapel at the east end of the south aisle, and a gabled south porch.

Coflein, quoting the listing, describes wide aisles with yellow brick walls banded in red and black, timber arcades on slender quatrefoil stone piers, a carved reredos in Portland stone and alabaster, and stained glass including twentieth-century work by Comper. The church is listed for its architectural interest as a parish church by three noteworthy local architects.
