St Cassian, Chaddesley Corbett

St Cassian is a Grade I parish church on Village Street in Chaddesley Corbett, Worcestershire, in the Diocese of Worcester.

Overview

Historic England records a twelfth-century parish church extended in the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The west tower and spire were rebuilt in 1778–79 by James Rose; the church was restored in 1863–64 by William Butterfield. The fabric is sandstone ashlar with tile roofs. The plan is a west tower with spire, a twelfth-century nave, fourteenth-century north and south aisles, a fourteenth-century chancel and a thirteenth-century north chapel.

The four-stage tower is capped by an octagonal stone spire with two levels of windows. It has a crenellated parapet above a moulded cornice, offsets to each stage and angle buttresses. The second stage has a circular window in a quatrefoil recess. The west ground floor has a three-light nineteenth-century window in place of a door; the entrance is now in the south wall under a two-centred head of two moulded orders. The south aisle has a crenellated parapet, diagonal buttresses and an ogee-headed niche with a crocketed canopy. The church is usually open during daylight hours.
