# St Bartholomew, Moreton Corbet

The Church of St Bartholomew stands beside the English Heritage ruins of Moreton Corbet Castle in Shropshire, a Grade I parish church in the Diocese of Lichfield and the burial church of the Corbet family.

## Overview

The church has twelfth-century origins, later medieval fabric and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century refacing and windows. It was listed Grade I on 28 October 1960 (NHLE 1307235). English Heritage records two elaborately sculpted and painted chest tombs: Sir Robert Corbet (d. 1513), sometime sheriff of Shropshire, and his wife Elizabeth Vernon; and their son Richard Corbet (d. 1566), standard bearer around Boulogne and later a member of the Council of the North, with his wife Margaret Savile. Later wall tablets commemorate eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Corbets. A squire’s pew is built into the south wall.

The castle and church stand on the former Moreton Toret estate, granted with Shawbury to Haughmond Abbey around 1150. The parish is Moreton Corbet.
