# St Barnabas, Great Tey

St Barnabas is a Grade I parish church on The Street, Great Tey, Essex, in the Diocese of Chelmsford.

## Overview

Historic England records walls of rubble with brick and freestone dressings and a plan once cruciform and of the twelfth century. The chancel was rebuilt early in the fourteenth century; the north and south transepts were built late in that century. The central tower is described as remarkable. The chancel retains its original roof of seven cants, plastered. Listing NGR is TL 89199 25783.

Colchester Heritage Explorer notes much Roman brick and tile built into the church, especially in the tower. The four stages of the central tower are divided externally by projecting courses of Roman brick; the second stage has round-headed recesses of Roman brick, and the bell-chamber has two-light windows with central columns and cushion capitals. Walls are flint rubble mixed with Roman bricks and some freestone, possibly taken from a scheduled Roman villa about 500 metres to the south-west.
