# St Augustine, Hedon

St Augustine's, known as the King of Holderness, is a Grade I cruciform parish church on Church Lane, Hedon, East Riding of Yorkshire, in the Diocese of York.

## Overview

Historic England describes a thirteenth-century parish church of national importance, little altered except for the crossing tower of 1428 and a restoration of 1868-76 by G. E. Street. The Hedon Museum and National Churches Trust note the earliest fabric from about 1190. The plan is nave and aisles, transepts and chancel, with a lofty central tower. The chancel and transepts are Early English and the nave Early Decorated.

The listing highlights an outstanding late fourteenth-century font; stained glass by Wailes and Son of 1878, especially the two east windows of the south aisle; a brass eagle lectern of 1876 given by J. W. Rawson; and Royal Arms of 1741 in the north transept. Monuments include a thirteenth-century black marble tomb cover, a fourteenth-century effigy of a man with sword and purse, and a Baroque cartouche to Ann Watson (1721). It is the only survivor of Hedon's three medieval churches. The parish website states the church is generally open daily for visitors.
