# St Anne, Soho

St Anne is the Church of England parish church of Soho, on Dean Street in the Diocese of London. The surviving tower is listed Grade II*; the nave was rebuilt in 1990–91 after wartime destruction.

## Overview

The church was consecrated on 21 March 1686 by Bishop Henry Compton. Construction began in 1677 on a basilican plan attributed to William Talman and/or Christopher Wren. The original timber spire by John Meard (1718) was replaced when the tower became unstable: S. P. Cockerell rebuilt it in brick in 1801–03, with a Portland-stone bell chamber and copper cupola. The 1691 clock bell was retained.

The body of the church was burned out on 24 September 1940. The tower was used as a chapel in the 1950s and restored with the new church in 1990–91, after the Saint Anne, Soho Act 1965 allowed the site to be cleared. Princess Anne laid a foundation stone on 12 March 1990; the new church and community complex was rededicated on 26 July 1991. The listing applies to the tower. Dorothy L. Sayers's ashes are interred beneath it. Centrepoint was founded in the church house basement in 1969.
