# St Andrew, Halton Holegate

St Andrew’s stands on the hill at Halton Holegate, Lincolnshire, a Grade II* Perpendicular parish church of greenstone and limestone, in the Diocese of Lincoln. (The Gazette slug uses ‘Holton’; the village and listing use Halton Holegate.)

## Overview

A church is recorded in Domesday. Historic England dates the present building to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries: a three-stage early fifteenth-century west tower (largely rebuilt in the nineteenth century), clerestoried nave, aisles, chancel and south porch, of limestone ashlar and squared greenstone rubble with lead roofs. The porch was rebuilt in 1831, the aisles in 1846 (north doorway dated 1846), the tower and east end in 1866 by James Fowler under the supervision of G. E. Street, and the chancel in 1894. Sixteen clerestory windows light lofty nave arcades. A recumbent knight of about 1350 is thought to be Sir Henry de Halton; a Purbeck slab inscribed in Norman French commemorates Sir Walter de Bec (about 1250). The church was listed Grade II* on 3 February 1967 (NHLE 1359727). Roof and tower repairs have been supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
