# St Andrew, Holborn

St Andrew Holborn is a Grade I Church of England guild church on St Andrew Street / Holborn Viaduct, City of London, rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in 1686–87 and restored after the Blitz.

## Overview

Historic England lists the Church of St Andrew (NHLE 1064643, listed 4 January 1950). A timber church is mentioned in King Edgar’s charter of about 959; a stone church of the mid fifteenth century stood here by the late seventeenth century. Although outside the area burned in 1666, Wren rebuilt it with his City churches. The fifteenth-century tower was kept, refaced and raised in 1703–04. Samuel Sanders Teulon built a Gothic rectory, court house and vestry clerk’s office to the south in 1868–71 (listed Grade II) after Holborn Viaduct was constructed. An incendiary bomb on 16 April 1941 gutted the church; Seeley and Paget completed a stone-for-stone restoration in 1961. Fittings brought from elsewhere include the Foundling Hospital font, pulpit and Handel organ case, and Thomas Coram’s tomb (1961). The church is now also associated with the Royal College of Organists. Benjamin Disraeli was baptised here in 1817.
