# St Andrew, Caunton

St Andrew’s is a Grade I parish church on Main Street, Caunton, Nottinghamshire, in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, a medieval village church restored by Ewan Christian.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church built from the twelfth to the fifteenth century, comprising nave, north and south aisles, east chancel, west tower and south porch, with restoration and rebuilding of the chancel in 1869 by Ewan Christian. The fabric is ashlar and dressed stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs; rainwater heads are dated 1869. The two-stage west tower is fourteenth- and fifteenth-century, with a crenellated parapet, gargoyles and a thirteenth-century west doorway. The nave clerestory has fifteenth-century triple lancets.

The listing highlights extensive survival of medieval fabric, including stone carvings, a thirteenth-century font and an ogee-arched piscina, with high-quality Victorian fittings. Samuel Reynolds Hole, later Dean of Rochester and a noted rosarian, was vicar for many years and is buried in the churchyard; a chancel dado inscription of 1905 commemorates him. The dedication to St Andrew is recorded by 1536.
