Overview
The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales records Rivertown Congregational Chapel as built in 1897 and enlarged in 1911. The congregation’s own account, and that of Ainsley Gommon Architects, states that worship began in May 1897 in a corrugated-metal building and that a larger brick church opened in 1899, later extended north in 1911 and south in the 1960s, when the original entrance was replaced. The building is not listed by Cadw.
The church remains an active United Reformed congregation and community hub. A redevelopment known as Hope on the High Street, designed with Ainsley Gommon Architects, has planning consent to reorder the interior for café, halls and community use. Coflein holds the monument record for the chapel.
