Overview
Historic England records a parish church raised to cathedral status in 1914, with a crossing tower and spire, chancel chapels of about 1520, nave and east end reconstructed in 1790–1805 (alleged by John Carr), restoration of 1841 by Robert Potter, and transepts, nave arcade and west end of 1880 by William Flockton. Pre-1880 work is Perpendicular; later additions are Decorated and later Gothic. The Chapel of the Holy Spirit, offices and west-end narthex of 1960–66 are by Ansell and Bailey. The fabric is ashlar.
Wikipedia states that a twelfth-century church of William de Lovetot was burned in 1266; a successor of 1280 was largely rebuilt about 1430 on a cruciform plan. The Shrewsbury Chapel houses Tudor monuments of the Earls of Shrewsbury. The fifteenth-century sanctuary and chancel survive; the chancel has a hammerbeam roof with gilded angels. Sir Charles Nicholson's early-twentieth-century realignment was scaled back after the world wars. The lantern glass is by Amber Hiscott (1998–99). The cathedral remains the parish church of the smaller Parish of Sheffield as well as the diocesan seat.
