# St Bartholomew, Sealand

St Bartholomew’s is a Grade II Church in Wales parish church off Sealand Road (A548), Flintshire, in the Diocese of St Asaph. Cadw lists it as an early church by John Douglas of Chester, with coherent Early Decorated Gothic detail and a fine interior.

## Overview

Cadw records a church of 1865–7 by John Douglas; the builder was Robert Bellis. The River Dee Company gave the land and partly paid for the building. It was consecrated on 15 October 1867. Coflein describes coursed rock-faced red Helsby sandstone with freestone plinth and window dressings under a slate roof: an aisleless nave, narrower lower chancel, gabled south porch, gabled north organ chamber, and a south-east tower with pyramidal roof at the junction of nave and chancel. A semi-circular stair turret sits on the tower’s west side over a lean-to vestry entrance.

The interior retains original furnishings designed by Douglas, including choir stalls with curved ends, ornamented roundels and pierced patterns, and sedilia. An octagonal font with IHS monograms stands on marble columns. Cadw notes that the east window, depicting the Crucifixion, was donated by Douglas and designed by Hardman; the west window of the twelve disciples, of 1880, is by Kempe.
