# St Mary, Sand Hutton

St Mary’s is a Grade II parish church at the west end of Sand Hutton, North Yorkshire, in the Diocese of York and the Harton Benefice.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church of 1840–42 by Salvin, remodelled in 1885–86 by C. Hodgson Fowler, in sandstone ashlar with some reused medieval fabric in the tower and a Westmorland slate roof. The plan is a five-bay nave with a south tower incorporating the porch, a north vestry, a two-bay chancel and a north organ chamber. Windows mix Decorated and Perpendicular tracery. The three-stage tower has a pointed south doorway, a lancet above, paired belfry openings and a broach spire. The interior includes a monument to Deborah Read (died 1794) by I. Fisher of York. Listing NGR: SE6949158579.

The Church Heritage Record and Harton Benefice state that James Walker of Sand Hutton Hall paid for the church as a chapel of ease replacing twelfth-century St Leonard’s (ruins remain in the churchyard and are a scheduled monument). It was consecrated on 31 May 1847; the parish of Sand Hutton (with Claxton) was formed in 1861. Fowler’s work included adding a choir. The tower was restored in 2016–18. The oak screen of 1900 commemorates James Robert Walker, 2nd Baronet.
