# Our Lady Help Of Christians, Ruthin

Our Lady Help of Christians is a Catholic church on Mwrog Street, Ruthin, Denbighshire, in the Diocese of Wrexham and the Parish of the Vale of Clwyd.

## Overview

Taking Stock records land bought on Mwrog Street in the mid-nineteenth century for a church and school. The 1860 school building, of random rubble red sandstone with a slate roof, a central projecting porch and gabled dormer windows, now serves as a narthex. A Coflein attribution of the façade to Henry Clutton is not supported by the survey: Clutton restored Ruthin Castle for the West family, but the building is not characteristic of his work. Jesuits from St Beuno’s College served the mission. In 1931–32 the church was tripled in length to seat about 250 and opened by the Bishop of Menevia in April 1932; the sanctuary could be closed off so the nave doubled as a hall. A further sanctuary extension followed in the 1950s. The 1930s church is a modest single-storey brick building with pebbledash render, five timber windows to each side, a roof light over the sanctuary, and exposed roof trusses of late Victorian character that may have been reused. Stained glass in several windows was brought from other churches. The group is unlisted but contributes to the conservation area. The church is now served from Denbigh.
