# Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley

Rievaulx Abbey is a Grade I ruin of a Cistercian monastery in the Rye valley near Helmsley, North Yorkshire, in the care of English Heritage.

## Overview

Historic England lists the abbey church and monastic buildings as twelfth- to fifteenth-century ruins of sandstone and limestone. Heritage Gateway records a Cistercian house founded in 1131 by Walter Espec and dissolved in 1538. Because of the valley the church is aligned north–south rather than east–west. The house was intended as a mission centre from which daughter houses were founded across the north of England and Scotland. It reached a peak around 1200; costly building in the thirteenth century left the community in debt, and by the Dissolution only twenty-two monks remained where there had been 140 monks and over 500 lay brothers in the time of Abbot Ailred.

The wider precinct is a scheduled monument (list entry 1012065). The ruins passed into state care in 1917 and are now maintained by English Heritage. Substantial standing remains of the church, including the presbytery and south transept, survive in the North York Moors.
