# St Mary, Riccall

St Mary’s is a Grade I parish church on Church Street, Riccall, North Yorkshire, in the Diocese of York: a twelfth-century church whose south doorway is among the finest Romanesque portals in the county.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church of mid to late twelfth-century nave with early thirteenth-century arcades, late thirteenth-century chancel and north chapel, and a probable fifteenth-century south chapel, restored in 1864–65 by J. L. Pearson, who rebuilt the west tower, south aisle wall and porch. The fabric is magnesian limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof. The plan has a two-stage west tower, south porch, five-bay aisled nave and two-bay chancel with single-bay chapels. The embattled south porch frames a plank south door in a three-order surround of beakheads, animals, faces and interlace, with a hoodmould of rosettes.

CRSBI and the Victoria County History record that Pearson left the south doorway in place, propped, while rebuilding around it. The church belonged to the prebend of Riccall. A Viking fleet is traditionally said to have based itself at Riccall before Stamford Bridge; a church is mentioned in Domesday Book.
