# St Thomas the Apostle, Redwick

St Thomas's is a Grade I medieval parish church at the centre of Redwick, on the Caldicot Levels south-east of Newport, in the Church in Wales Diocese of Monmouth and the Netherwent Ministry Area.

## Overview

Cadw (list 2940, designated 1 March 1963) records a medieval church with fourteenth- and fifteenth-century work, possibly twelfth-century origins, restored in 1875. The fabric is brown-yellow, grey and buff stone under slate roofs. The plan is unusual: nave, north and south aisles, a three-stage central tower between nave and chancel, and a south porch. The tower has a crenellated parapet and Decorated two-light bell openings. The porch is castellated, with a mark on the right of the doorway recording the height of the Great Flood of 1606/7. The east window is an unusual Decorated three-light with an undulating head and reticulated tracery.

Interior arcades are of three bays with hexagonal shafts under an arch-braced roof. The font has a square scalloped bowl on a central pillar and four corner shafts. Wikipedia, following Pevsner, attributes the 1874-75 restoration to James Norton. An earlier dedication, when the church belonged to Tintern Abbey, appears to have been to St Michael. A medieval churchyard cross socket stands near the gates.
