# St Hugh, Quethiock

St Hugh of Lincoln is a Grade I parish church in the centre of Quethiock, Cornwall, standing on a raised lan, in the Diocese of Truro.

## Overview

Historic England records rebuilding or enlargement in 1259 (then dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul) and a further rebuilding dedicated to St Hugh in 1288. The present cruciform church is largely early to mid-fourteenth century, possibly on a Norman plan; the tower base may be late twelfth century. A slender two-stage west tower rises from the nave roof, with a south staircase turret under a saddleback roof. The north aisle is fifteenth-century Perpendicular granite. Elliot of Plymouth restored the church in 1878–79; Rector W. Willimott carved, painted and made much of the stained glass, including a chancel-screen crucifixion and a window of St Hugh with his swan. Original waggon roofs survive in nave, north aisle and porch, the nave richly moulded. Monuments include the brass of Roger Kyngdon (d. 1471) and an altar tomb of Hugh Vashmond (d. 1599). A scheduled churchyard cross, among the tallest in Cornwall, was re-erected in 1881. The church is routinely open from 9.30am to 5.30pm.
