Overview
The foundation stone was laid on 3 October 1849 and the chapel of ease to St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, opened in 1851, serving a growing township with support from the Earl of Wilton. Extensions followed in 1863, 1871, 1884, 1888 and 1899. An Order in Council of May 1885 made it a parish church in its own right (parish of Holyrood). Arts and Crafts fittings by Dan Gibson, made by Arthur W. Simpson of Kendal, include choir stalls of 1897–99, a richly carved west screen of 1920 with figures by W. Aumonier, and a war memorial. Stained glass includes Ward and Hughes at the west end and Shrigley and Hunt elsewhere.
Arson on 21 February 1985 destroyed the organ and Lady Chapel. Restoration by E. G. Thorne allowed the Bishop of Manchester to re-hallow the church on 8 September 1986. Late twentieth-century fittings include paintings by Graeme Willson.
