# Pickering Methodist Church

Pickering Methodist Church on Potter Hill is a Grade II Italianate chapel of 1885, built for the Primitive Methodists and now the town’s Methodist Church.

## Overview

Historic England lists a two-storey Italianate chapel in coursed stone with ashlar dressings. A pediment to the street carries a stone band reading Primitive Methodist Chapel 1885. The first floor has four round-arched windows with keystones and an impost band; the ground floor has two similar windows and a projecting doorway with a stone cornice, paired doors, segmental fanlights and pilastered round-arched heads. Wikipedia, following Pevsner, names Thomas Howdill as architect and gives a cost of £3,500, partly offset by selling the old Bridge Street chapel. The new building seated about 550, with a Sunday school for about 400.

Both Primitive and Wesleyan chapels opened in Pickering in 1885; after Methodist union the former Primitive building remained in use. The interior has a large gallery, curved pews and a brass war memorial. The church stands near Beck Isle Museum and the North York Moors Railway.
