# Our Lady of Sorrows, Peckham

Our Lady of Sorrows is a Grade II Roman Catholic church on Friary Road, Peckham, in the Archdiocese of Southwark. It was listed as the Church of Our Lady of Seven Dolours.

## Overview

Historic England records a Franciscan church of 1864–66 by Edward Welby Pugin: stock brick with black brick and stone banding, a pitched slate roof, tall nave and buttressed aisles, and a gabled east end with a large rose window over narrow lancets. The interior has a five-bay nave arcade of narrow pointed arches, an arch-braced panelled ceiling, and a chancel panelled in coloured marbles.

Bishop Grant invited the Capuchins to Peckham in 1854; the site was acquired in 1856. Pugin prepared sketches in 1857–8 and the foundation stone was laid in July 1859; shortage of funds delayed the opening until 1866. The adjoining friary of 1884 is by James O'Byrne. The parish is now served by the Norbertine canons.
