# Over Denton Church

Over Denton Church, also known as St Cuthbert’s, is a Grade II* former parish church in Upper Denton, Cumbria, on Hadrian’s Wall, in the Diocese of Carlisle.

## Overview

Historic England dates the fabric to the early twelfth century: a two-bay nave and single-bay chancel in squared calciferous sandstone taken from the nearby Roman Wall, with large flush quoins and a stone-slate roof. The chancel arch is Roman, reputed to have come from Birdoswald fort. The west wall and bellcote were rebuilt in the eighteenth century. Windows and rainwater heads dated 1881 mark a Victorian restoration.

Interior fittings were removed when the church was declared redundant in the 1970s. The font was reinstalled in 2019 and the building reconsecrated. It is also a scheduled monument (NHLE 1015251). The civil parish is Upper Denton; the Church of England parish is Gilsland St Mary Magdalene.
