# Old St Stephen, Fylingthorpe

Old St Stephen on Church Lane, Fylingdales, stands on the hillside above Robin Hood’s Bay: a Grade I Gothick former parish church of 1821, in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

## Overview

Historic England records a former parish church, an 1821 rebuilding on a medieval site: coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone with ashlar dressings and a purple slate roof; a single-cell preaching box with a small sanctuary, south porch and north vestry (early additions), in Gothick style. The open-pedimented porch has a segment-arched entrance; a sundial is dated 1736, 1864 and 1919. The five-bay nave has pointed-arched windows with interlaced heads. The interior keeps complete late Georgian fittings: a panelled gallery on the north and west on Roman Doric columns, and a lateral south pulpit with sounding board. Wikipedia dates completion to 1822 and closure to 1870, when a new parish church superseded it. Listed Grade I on 6 October 1969 (NHLE 1148706). No independent parish website other than the Trust’s listing host is used here.
