# Old St Peter, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd

Old St Peter’s is the Grade II ruin of the medieval parish church of Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Denbighshire, on the eastern slope of the Vale of Clwyd, in the Diocese of St Asaph.

## Overview

Cadw records a church first mentioned in the Lincoln Taxatio of 1291. The western half is probably late thirteenth century, of red sandstone rubble; the eastern half is a fourteenth- or fifteenth-century rebuild or extension in limestone and slatestone rubble. Surviving openings are largely medieval: west, south and blocked north doorways belong to the first phase. A post-Reformation two-light mullioned window lights the former bell loft; the limestone bellcote is first-half nineteenth century.

The church was abandoned in 1863 for a new parish church in the village, paid for by Mr Jesse of Llanbedr Hall and designed by Poundley and Walker. Cadw describes a roofless ruin, walls reduced to about two metres except the full-height west gable. A late medieval timber-framed south porch recorded in 1966 has gone. The community history records that the building was not deconsecrated until 1991 and that ownership is vested in the Representative Body of the Church in Wales. It is listed Grade II as a ruinous medieval former parish church (Cadw 738).
