# Odda's Chapel, Deerhurst

Odda's Chapel is a Grade I late Anglo-Saxon former chantry at Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, in the care of English Heritage and standing beside Abbot's Court farmhouse.

## Overview

Historic England lists a former chapel of 1056 for Earl Odda, recorded by a datestone, later altered in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and restored in 1885 and 1965. The nave is random rubble with long-and-short quoins and a stone-slate roof. The chancel is rendered stone on the north and irregular-bond brickwork on the south to the ground floor, with timber-framing and rendered panels above and a tiled roof. The listing describes a double-splayed nave window with a semi-circular head, a doorway with plain imposts and a semi-circular head with hoodmould, and a chancel arch with long-and-short quoins, moulded capitals and a horseshoe arch.

Wikipedia and the listing together record that the chapel was completed a decade before the Norman Conquest and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. In 1965 it was disentangled from Abbot's Court and the roof restored. It remains a rare standing late Saxon church, now unconsecrated and open as a historic monument.
