# Northampton Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of Our Lady Immaculate and St Thomas of Canterbury on Barrack Road is the Roman Catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Northampton, a Grade II Decorated Revival church begun by A. W. N. Pugin in 1844 and enlarged by E. W. Pugin in 1863.

## Overview

Historic England records nave and aisles mainly of 1863 by Edward Welby Pugin, enlarging a much smaller church of 1844 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, with crossing tower, transepts and chancel of 1948–55 by Albert Herbert. The nineteenth-century parts are in Decorated style, of brick with stone dressings. Bishop Wareing commissioned Pugin’s collegiate chapel of St Felix, built in 1844. E. W. Pugin’s nave, dedicated to Our Lady Immaculate and St Thomas of Canterbury, opened in 1864. Bishop Leo Parker’s eastward extension of 1948–55 replaced the original east end with a straight east end, transepts and crossing tower. Listed Grade II on 22 January 1976 (NHLE 1372183).
