# Newry Cathedral

The Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Colman on Hill Street, Newry, County Down, is a Grade A listed Roman Catholic cathedral and the seat of the Bishop of Dromore. It was designed by the Newry architect Thomas Duff.

## Overview

Construction began on Seymour's Green in 1825; the foundation stone was laid on 8 June 1825 and the building was dedicated on 6 May 1829, the first such ceremony in a Catholic church after the Roman Catholic Relief Act of that year. At opening the cathedral comprised a chancel and nave only, built of local granite. Transepts, sacristy and the north tower were added in 1888–90; new bells followed in 1898. In 1904–09 the east end was rebuilt to form the present sanctuary and side chapels, the original west front was dismantled, and the church was extended one bay towards the street. Interior mosaics, organ, heating and lighting belong to this campaign. A pulpit designed by G. C. Ashlin was installed in 1893.

In 1919 the former pro-cathedral was elevated as the Cathedral of St Patrick and St Colman. The sanctuary was rearranged about 1990 to a new altar by Felix Forte of McLean and Forte, Belfast. The Northern Ireland listing (HB16/28/001a) covers the cathedral, gates, gate piers and railings, listed on 26 February 1976.
