# All Saints, Muggleswick

All Saints is an unlisted parish church on a hilltop at Muggleswick, County Durham, near the Grade I ruins of the Durham Priory monastic grange. It is in the Diocese of Newcastle and the parish of Edmundbyers and Muggleswick, one of the Moorland Group of churches.

## Overview

A church was founded here in 1259 after the priors of Durham established a retreat grange under Prior Hugh of Darlington. The present stone church was rebuilt about 1728 on the site of the former building, reusing much of its material. Kelly's Directory records further rebuilding in 1869. The Church Heritage Record confirms that the church itself is not a listed building.

The building is a plain nave and chancel in one, with a bellcote and two porches. A 1933 lychgate was constructed from salvaged timbers from HMS Powerful. Interior furnishings of 1913 and 1917 were given by the Ritson family of Calf Hall. The churchyard contains Grade II listed seventeenth- and eighteenth-century tombs and the Mayer tomb, an early work by the sculptor John Graham Lough. A grave cover of 1712 commemorates the mosstrooper Roland Harrison. The church stands on the Northern Saints Trails and the Roof of England route and is opened daily.
