# Mitcham Methodist Church

Mitcham Methodist Church on Cricket Green is a Grade II post-war chapel of 1958–59 by Edward Mills and Partners, with engineers Ove Arup and Partners.

## Overview

A Fair Green Methodist church of 1909 was destroyed in the Blitz of 1940. Mills, the leading post-war Methodist church architect, grouped chapel, hall and classrooms around a courtyard looking onto the green. The chapel’s exposed concrete frame of seven-by-four bays carries a folded slab roof that continues as a covered walkway; the east end is clad in York stone. Interior fittings largely survive. The building featured in Mills’s book *The Modern Church* (1956) and in G. E. Kidder Smith’s *The New Churches of Europe* (1964). Listed in 2010 after local conservation pressure, it was refurbished and rededicated on 15 October 2016.
