# Milton Abbey, Milton Abbas

The Abbey Church of St Mary, St Samson and St Branwalader at Milton Abbas, Dorset, is a Grade I former Benedictine church of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, now used with Milton Abbey School.

## Overview

After a fourteenth-century fire the nave was not rebuilt; the surviving church is choir with aisles, transepts and crossing tower. James Wyatt restored the fabric around 1790 for the Earl of Dorchester’s new house in the valley; Sir George Gilbert Scott restored it again in 1865. Interior fittings include a fourteenth-century pulpitum, fifteenth-century reredos and pyx shrine, fourteenth-century sedilia, and an eighteenth-century monument by Agostino Carlini to Lady Milton. The adjoining mansion by Chambers and Wyatt is now the school. St Catherine’s Chapel on the hill is a separately listed Norman church.
