# Holme St Cuthbert, Mawbray

Holme St Cuthbert is the Church of England parish church for the Solway hamlet of that name, about a mile inland from Mawbray, Cumbria, in the Diocese of Carlisle.

## Overview

Geograph and Co-Curate record a Gothic parish church of 1845 by William Armstrong. It began as a chapel of ease to St Mary’s, Holme Cultram Abbey; in 1857 Holme St Cuthbert became a separate ecclesiastical parish, having previously been a township in the ancient parish of Holme Cultram. The civil parish contains Mawbray and neighbouring hamlets. Local accounts note that Mawbray had already lost two earlier churches to the Irish Sea.

The 1845 church was built with a bellcote, replaced in 1874 by a wooden spire. A storm in 1919 damaged the spire, which was demolished and replaced about 1924 by the present low stone west tower with a square stair turret. The church is not on the National Heritage List for England; listed buildings in the civil parish are houses, farms and a Methodist chapel. The church is open every day for private prayer.
