# Luss Parish Church

Luss Parish Church, also known as St Mackessog’s, stands on the banks of Loch Lomond in Luss, Argyll and Bute: a Category B Church of Scotland church of 1875, the third known church on the site, open daily from 10am to dusk.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland lists Luss Parish Church including burial ground, lych gates and boundary wall, excluding scheduled monument SM2461 (LB14430, Category B, 14 May 1971, amended 19 May 2017). The list describes a Gothic T-plan church of 1875 with an apsed east end, in squared and snecked pink sandstone rubble with honey-coloured sandstone margins and dressings and plate tracery. A west plaque records that Sir James Colquhoun rebuilt the church. It replaces an earlier church of 1771. Scotland’s Churches Trust notes a uniquely timbered roof, a medieval font, a recumbent bishop’s effigy, two early medieval incised crosses, and Colquhoun heraldic funeral hatchments in the Laird’s Loft. The graveyard includes a Viking hogback stone and other listed monuments.

The interior has a decorative open wooden roof on stone corbels and arched braces, a heritors’ loft (now partly a church shop), and stained glass including a head of St Kessog in the apse; the Colquhouns were keepers of the Bachuil of St Kessog. HES Category B listing cannot be stored on the list-entry field used for Historic England and Cadw URLs. The D1 county field records Highland; the church stands in Argyll and Bute on Loch Lomond.
