Overview
Historic England records a parish church of the twelfth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, restored in 1869 by A. W. Maberly, of random rubble with larger quoins to the transepts and chancel, better squared stone to the upper tower, ashlar to the parapet, and a tiled roof. The four-stage west tower has a semi-circular headed doorway, later battlements (replacing a spire) and crocketed corner finials. The plan is nave, transepts, chancel, west tower, south porch and vestry. Interior fittings include Royal Arms of William III over the south door, early nineteenth-century painted boards of the Decalogue, Lord’s Prayer and Creed, and a recumbent effigy of a priest in the north transept. Listed Grade II* on 4 July 1985 (NHLE 1299178). A medieval churchyard cross base nearby is a scheduled monument.
The church is recorded in 1144 among grants by Baderon of Monmouth to the priory of St Mary and St Florence, Monmouth. The parish is Longhope.
