# Longcauseway Church, Dewsbury

Longcauseway Church is a Grade II Gothic Revival building on Longcauseway in Dewsbury town centre. It is a Local Ecumenical Partnership of the United Reformed Church and the Methodist Church.

## Overview

Historic England lists the former Ebenezer Congregational Church of 1884 by Walter Hanstock, in Decorated Gothic Revival: white Holmfirth ashlar to the front, hammer-dressed stone elsewhere, and a pitched Westmorland slate roof. The four-bay front has a large central arched and gabled portal with grey granite colonnettes and a carved Resurrection in the tympanum. Six gabled side bays are divided by buttresses. Inside are a panelled pulpit and communion table, pitch-pine pews, a good organ case in the six-sided apse, an elaborate plaster frieze and a vaulted panelled roof.

The congregation records that this third Ebenezer Chapel on the site opened on 15 January 1884, cost £8,891 and could seat 800. It joined the United Reformed Church in 1972. Town-centre redevelopment closed the building in 1981; it reopened in 1983 with new ancillary rooms. In September 2010 the church formed a Local Ecumenical Partnership with Methodist congregations in Dewsbury.
