# St Dochdwy, Llandough (near Cowbridge)

St Dochdwy is a Grade II Church in Wales parish church in the centre of Llandough village, south of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, standing within the precincts of Llandough Castle. It is in the Diocese of Llandaff and the Cowbridge Ministry Area.

## Overview

Cadw records a parish church of fourteenth-century origins, restored in 1869 by Charles Buckeridge, a pupil of Sir George Gilbert Scott, in a First Pointed Victorian Gothic manner. The listing notes that the nave retains its original fourteenth-century cradle roof and an octagonal fourteenth-century font, while the chancel arch, much of the fenestration, pews, pulpit and chancel screen date from 1869. The chancel has a nineteenth-century wagon roof; the sanctuary roof is panelled.

The Cowbridge Ministry Area history states that the Celtic dedication suggests a pre-Norman church. Medieval survivals include carved beams in the fourteenth-century porch, a holy-water stoup by the south door, and a rood-stair in the north nave wall. A monumental brass north of the sanctuary commemorates Wenllian Walsche (died Christmas Day 1427); the Walsche family were lords of the manor from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries. Two bells in the exterior bellcote are attributed to Thomas Revel, working in the 1350s. Cadw lists the church for its medieval origins and later nineteenth-century restoration.
