St Peter, Little Barrington

St Peter's is a Grade I parish church on Middle Road, Little Barrington, in the Cotswold District of Gloucestershire, in the Diocese of Gloucester and the Windrush Benefice.

Overview

Historic England records an Anglican parish church of the late twelfth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, of coursed squared and dressed limestone under a stone-slate roof. The plan is a nave with projecting south porch, a north aisle, a tower at the west end of the north aisle, and a chancel at the east end of the nave. The nave was largely rebuilt in the fourteenth century. The south doorway is a late-twelfth-century round-headed archway with keeled jamb shafts, stiff-leaf capitals, and outer arches deeply cut with chevron and lozenge ornament; the hoodmould has dogtooth decoration. The north arcade has pointed arches on cylindrical piers with scalloped capitals. Early wagon roofs survive in the nave and chancel.

Fixtures include a fifteenth-century octagonal limestone font and an early-eighteenth-century communion table. Wikipedia and the Victoria County History note that the church was a dependent chapel of Great Barrington and that both churches belonged to Llanthony Priory. Britain Express highlights Georgian wall paintings and a canopied Tayler family memorial built into the south porch. The Church Heritage Record names the parish Little Barrington. The benefice site states that the church is always open.
