# St Michael the Archangel, Litlington

St Michael's is a Grade I parish church on The Street in Litlington, East Sussex, in the Diocese of Chichester: a small Downland church of flint with a weatherboarded bell-turret and shingled broach spire, mainly of the twelfth century.

## Overview

Historic England lists the Parish Church of St Michael the Archangel (list entry 1353380, designated 30 August 1966). The listing records a flint church with a slate roof: chancel, nave with a wooden bell-turret surmounted by a broached shingled spire, and south porch. The chancel and nave are twelfth-century with later windows, except the westernmost bay of the nave beneath the bell-turret, which with the porch is fifteenth-century. Interior fittings include sedilia with a thirteenth-century shaft and an Easter Sepulchre with a Perpendicular arch.

The Cuckmere Churches parish site and local descriptions treat the main fabric as about 1150, with blocked Norman openings visible in the north wall of the nave. The floor falls from east to west. Massive original roof beams survive; a Victorian removal of one beam near the chancel arch caused spreading later checked by a steel tie-bar. The church stands in the Cuckmere Valley civil parish and is normally open in daylight.
