# Seymour Street Methodist Church, Lisburn

Seymour Street Methodist Church stands on Seymour Street, Lisburn, County Antrim. John Wesley preached in the town in the 1770s and 1780s; the present church succeeded the Market Street chapel of 1772.

## Overview

The Dictionary of Irish Architects records a new church and school of 1874–75 by William Gray of Belfast, built by Thompson of Ballymacarrett to seat about 430, with a schoolroom below. The contemporary Irish Builder described the style as a modification of continental Gothic, faced in Belfast brick with Dungannon sandstone dressings, carved caps and an enriched cornice, and circular stone windows in the gables. The foundation stone was laid in November 1874. The church’s own history and local accounts state that Sir Richard Wallace gave the plot and that the building opened in November 1875.

A pipe organ was installed in 1920 as a First World War memorial. Rose and memorial stained-glass windows light the sanctuary. A manse followed on adjacent ground; the William Foote Memorial School of 1908 was demolished in 1999 and replaced by a new suite of halls opened in 2000.
