# St Matthew, Leyburn

St Matthew’s is a Grade II parish church on the A684 at Leyburn, North Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Leeds, the only complete church designed by Christopher George Wray.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church of 1868 by C. G. Wray in coursed sandstone with a Welsh slate roof: a three-storey west tower, nave with north aisle, chancel with north vestry and south porch. The tower has a three-light Decorated west window, a clock (Leyburn’s only public clock), a south-east stair turret and two-light belfry openings. The four-bay nave has reticulated quatrefoil windows; the chancel has a five-light Decorated east window. Inside are a four-bay arcade on circular columns and a hammerbeam nave roof. Listing NGR is SE 11379 90393.

Wikipedia, citing local histories, records consecration on 16 September 1868 by Bishop Robert Bickersteth, a cost of about £3,000 raised by subscription on land given by Lord Bolton, and a daughter-church status to Wensley until 1956. The organ was completed in May 1870. Wray also designed the Hull Dock Offices (now the Maritime Museum) and the Palace Hotel in Cairo.
