Overview
Cadw lists a large Victorian Gothic church completed in 1874 as a replacement for medieval St Hilary’s near the castle (reference 1007; designated 2 February 1981). The architects were Lloyd Williams and Underwood of Denbigh; George Clerk was the contractor. The foundation stone was laid in July 1871. Miss Mesham of Pont Ruffyd gave £4,300 toward a 100-foot tower with clock and a peal of eight bells. A lawsuit over the Caen-stone reredos by Thomas Earp delayed consecration until 7 December 1875, when Bishop Joshua Hughes of St Asaph consecrated the church after the disputed Crucifixion panel was modified. Cadw grades it II* as a particularly good unaltered mid-Victorian urban church with fine fittings and stained glass, including work by Hardman, Christopher Whall and Veronica Whall. It serves with St Marcella’s, Denbigh.
