# Campsie High Kirk, Lennoxtown

Campsie High Kirk (High Church of Campsie) on Main Street, Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire, is a Category A Gothic Revival church of 1828 by David Hamilton, a roofless ruin since a fire in 1984, now in community ownership.

## Overview

Historic Environment Scotland lists the High Church of Campsie (LB4353), designated 5 September 1973, as a work of 1828 by David Hamilton with later additions including an 1828 bell. Hamilton, often called the father of the architectural profession in Glasgow, also designed Hutchesons’ Hall, the Royal Exchange (now GoMA) and Lennox Castle. The kirk served until the 1970s and was left a ruin after the 1984 fire. The intact tower remains a local landmark above Lennoxtown, looking to the Campsie Fells.

In 2025 the King’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer transferred the ownerless building to the Friends of Campsie High Kirk under the Ownerless Property Transfer Scheme, for use as an arts and community hub. Plans include a “ghost tower” marking the lost upper stage. The site is in the historic parish of Campsie, not the City of Glasgow.
