# The Knowe, Bewcastle

The Knowe is a United Reformed church near Roadhead, Bewcastle, Cumbria, the most northerly congregation in its synod, about four and a half miles from the Scottish border.

## Overview

Co-Curate and local accounts record that the present Gothic building opened in 1891 to designs by Marshall of Naworth, replacing an earlier Presbyterian meeting house of 1790. The congregation became part of the United Reformed Church in 1972. The church serves a farming parish whose surnames include old reiver families. The emblem of the burning bush is recorded above the entrance.

The church itself is not listed. A granite obelisk war memorial of 1919 in the churchyard, by Messrs Beattie and Company, is listed Grade II (Historic England 1470927). It commemorates men of the parish who fell in the First World War and was unveiled on 28 December 1919.
