Overview
From 1943 Mass was said from St Anne's Cathedral in the Lawnswood Arms and later at Adel Community Centre. A site on Otley Old Road was acquired and Bishop Heenan laid the foundation stone on 7 February 1953. The building, designed by Stephen Simpson and built by the Leeds firm Mary Harrison, opened on 4 November 1953 as church and hall. In 1979 Peter Langtry-Langton added aisles and a full-width entrance porch and reordered the interior. A parish hall was built to the north about 1982.
The original Simpson design was an unaisled brick box with a concrete portal frame and a raised west gable. The present character is largely Langtry-Langton's wrap-around work, including an arched west porch with a large fibreglass Crucifixion roundel, probably by Rob Hickling of John Hardman Studios. Hardman Studios also made the almost continuous dalle de verre aisle walls, depicting New Testament themes in red, blue and yellow. The altar and ambo are of coursed Westmorland slate. The church is not listed.
